They fought for freedom. They fought for each other. They fought for us.

Some saw the darkest horrors of combat, of man’s indifference to human distress. Many saw their beloved friends fall beside them as they struggled against the enemy. Others suffered wounds that would last a lifetime.

And they endured it all for us.

They were part of something bigger than themselves – a collective struggle against injustice and tyranny – with a camaraderie and espirit de corps that defies definition by those who weren’t there. Only those who have been in the battle understand.

Yet they endured.

And in the process they protected and preserved this fragile thing called freedom. President Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same…”

The veterans among us, including those who still serve, have done that. They did their part so that others may follow in their footsteps to continue the effort.

They fought for freedom. They fought for each other. They fought for us.

They fought for this:

To all the veterans who have served, and to their families who waited for them to come home, thank you.
