I got this note from acclaimed cartoonist T. Brian Kelly:
“I was wondering if you know anything about the cartoonist who drew the USN cartoon character on the envelope attached here [circa 1952]. It was sent to me from an old friend in the SF Bay Area. It’s the envelope that contained a letter from his dad home to his mother when they were young and engaged to be married. He’s looking for info on the cartoonist. His dad was on the USS Henderson in San Francisco, CA. “
Here is the image:
Brian found another cartoon by the same cartoonist:
I could not find any information on Carmelle, the cartoonist who drew those classic cartoons, so I’m tossing it out to the greater Navy audience with the hope that one of you might recognize the art and artist and shed some light on who he (or she) is. You can send a note directly to me at quarterdeck@broadside.net.
