I was looking through the History Channel’s “This Day in History” and was amazed to see how many pivotal events occurred this week in American military history:
AUG 1, 1917: World War I breaks out. America would join the Allies in 1917.
AUG 2, 1776: Delegates sign the Declaration of Independence.
AUG 2, 1964: Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
AUG 2, 1990: Iraq invades Kuwait (video). This led to the first Gulf War in 1991.
AUG 3, 1958: USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571) travels under the North Pole (video).
AUG 4, 1790: Birth of the U.S. Coast Guard.
AUG 6, 1945: First atom bomb is dropped on Hiroshima (video).
AUG 7, 1990: President Bush orders Operation Desert Shield.
