On June 24, 2013, a simple statue was unveiled in the New Mexico town of Santa Fe. It honored one of Santa Fe’s own: Sergeant First Class Petry, war hero and Medal of Honor Recipient. Here is a quick video of the event.
I had the honor of meeting Leroy Petry about a year and a half ago. I found him to be friendly, humble, and willing to talk to anyone who wanted to meet a real life American icon. In his brief speech, you heard a whisper of that humility.
But what strikes me about him is that he understands what the Medal of Honor represents, and the need for all of us to have our heroes. The grace with which he carries himself and the medal he wears is inspiring.
He told his hometown citizens that Santa Fe was always a part of him; and now, he will be a part of Santa Fe as well.
I would add that he is a part of all of us.
