Changing of the Guard

(Arlington National Cemetery)

85 degree heat. 85 percent humidity.

I have seen the changing of the guard a dozen times or more. Today the heat was withering. And yet, as always, the sentinels were perfect. The synchronized changing of the guard was flawless.

They are there every hour of every day, and the respect they show to the fallen is matched only by the respect they are shown by the crowd.

The crowd. People from all walks of life, every political persuasion, and every corner of the country watch. When asked to stand, they do so. All of them. No one says a word. They all seem to understand what that silence represents.

It was so again today. And again, it made me proud. It made everyone proud.
