Getting old isn’t for sissies.” Bette Davis

I used to schedule big things like ships and jets. Now I schedule colonoscopies and timing belt replacements. My car and I are both getting older.

I have been through both procedures, and neither is pleasant.

As I recall, the last time I saw the doctor who does colonoscopies, everyone except him was – not to sound sexist – female. There are a few, rare times in a man’s life when he would prefer to deal exclusively with males and this is one of them.

In addition to all that, my fifteen year old SUV needs a second timing belt. One replacement in a car’s life is bad enough; two is worse. Based on past experience, I know there will be the inevitable “other” things that need fixing, all of which will add to the overall bill. That is to be expected, I guess, when an army of mechanics crawls all over an old car’s engine. Knowing that doesn’t make it any more pleasant.

Philosophically, both procedures need to be done if the car or I expect to keep moving. So I suppose I will just put my head down and plow forward, come hell or high water.

But to be honest, I’m not crazy about my options.
