FINALLY! The new book is ready for pre-order (thanks for your patience)! All pre-orders are signed by the author, and you have an option to add a hand-written personalized message for just five dollars. Buy two or more and shipping is free too! I don’t think I need to say it, but these make great (and at $14.95 pretty reasonable) presents for Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays and any other event where you give away presents. Next year, men and women who have lived their entire lives in a post-9/11 world will be old enough to join the military. I wish I could tell them what the world was like before they were born, because it was a different place. We were more innocent, maybe, or more naive. The day is seared in my memory, of course, like everyone else – the smoke, the fear, the shared experience of realizing in one agonizing instant that we were under attack – but more than anything else, I cannot forget the jumpers. Anyone who has been in a…
It has been ten years. TEN YEARS since the last Broadside book. Coming this summer. Stay tuned!
[UPDATE: Thanks for the support on May 4th – Wyakin raised over four thousand dollars that will be used to support the men and women who served and sacrificed for their country. I truly feel we are all in this together and have an obligation to – in the words of a country song – turn around and help the next one in line. It is an honor to be counted in your number.] The organization where I donate a lot of my time serves wounded and injured veterans as they pursue degrees and careers. Today – and today only…
You may have heard that actor Bill Paxton died this weekend at the young age of 61. To many of us in the weather community, he will be remembered as the daring storm chaser in the movie “Twister.” For a brief moment in 1996, he made it cool to be a weather geek. Rest in peace, Mr. Paxton.
Each year cartoonists all over the country submit twelve samples of their published cartoons and hope that they get picked for an award or two. Pathetic losers. You can almost smell their desperation. In a totally unrelated matter, here are twelve cartoons that I selected, for no apparent reason and certainly not in any hope of winning something as shallow and self-serving as a cartoon award. Sheesh. All members of the National Cartoonists Society vote on the winners of this and other categories, which makes it really expensive when it comes to bribes.
Humiliation: To be ashamed or embarrassed. (Merriam Webster) Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. (Albert Einstein) Hum-anity: To be ashamed or embarrassed over and over again and expect different results. (Bacon) Once again, it is my annual opportunity to wallow in self pity and loathing by submitting cartoons to the National Cartoonists Society for award consideration. Here are the twelve Workfarce cartoons that got sent in for 2016 (online category). Next: Newspaper panel cartoon category (Broadside and Greenside)
I Am a Veteran by Andrea Christensen Brett [Sent to me by Cliff – Army helo pilot, Vietnam Veteran, Purple Heart recipient]
Men and women have had entire careers – joined the Navy and retired after 30 years – within the time we have been married. At thirty-two years of marriage, we are officially lifers now. It is my true belief that no one knows who he or she is marrying. We all have our game faces on for at least a year before our true selves begin to emerge. It is then that we come to see whether (a) we married the right person, or (b) we didn’t. I did, and she just keeps getting better. We lived in eleven different…
