I got this note from acclaimed cartoonist T. Brian Kelly: “I was wondering if you know anything about the cartoonist who drew the USN cartoon character on the envelope attached here [circa 1952]. It was sent to me from an old friend in the SF Bay Area. It’s the envelope that contained a letter from his dad home to his mother when they were young and engaged to be married. He’s looking for info on the cartoonist. His dad was on the USS Henderson in San Francisco, CA. “ Here is the image: Brian found another cartoon by the same…

Today is Charity Tuesday (sometimes called Giving Tuesday), the day nonprofit organizations target for end-of-year donations. I believe in supporting those who work to benefit others, so please give generously (my recommended nonprofit is the Wyakin Foundation that serves wounded and injured vets). But another way to make a big difference is to click on this image and vote for Betty Mohlenbrock. I’ll tell you why in a minute. Once you get to the webpage, all you do is check the block next to her picture and you are done. If she gets the highest number of votes, her charity…

I am in uncharted territory. Having tried my hand at being a Sailor and a cartoonist, I am entering a new phase. I am now a merchant. With a new book out (Underway with Broadside, my fourth book), I am trying my hand at selling online. The store is small now, but hopefully will grow over the next few months to have more good stuff you can buy. Right now you can get two books at www.broadside.net: Underway with Broadside and The Rest of Broadside (my second book). We hope to eventually produce more copies of the other two books…

FINALLY! The new book is ready for pre-order (thanks for your patience)! All pre-orders are signed by the author, and you have an option to add a hand-written personalized message for just five dollars. Buy two or more and shipping is free too! I don’t think I need to say it, but these make great (and at $14.95 pretty reasonable) presents for Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays and any other event where you give away presents. Full color, 124pp, foreword by ADM Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Comments on back from former MCPON Terry Scott, Idaho State Senator…

[UPDATE: Thanks for the support on May 4th – Wyakin raised over four thousand dollars that will be used to support the men and women who served and sacrificed for their country. I truly feel we are all in this together and have an obligation to – in the words of a country song – turn around and help the next one in line. It is an honor to be counted in your number.] The organization where I donate a lot of my time serves wounded and injured veterans as they pursue degrees and careers. Today – and today only…
